Autumn/Winter 2015-16

A new School Council for Autumn/Winter 2015/16…

My goodness, what a busy couple of terms it’s been!

Our first job was to help Mrs Meade at The World’s Biggest Coffee Morning in order to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support.  The children helped to set up, serve (and eat) lots of delicious cakes, look after the donations, gave out stickers and even helped to clear up afterwards!  Here are some photos…

Autumn brought Harvest Festival celebrations with generous donations of food and toiletries for The Feed Project.  The school councillors helped the charity to carry lots of heavy bags from the classrooms to their car.  It was exhausting work!

Then on Friday 13th November it was Children In Need...

...was this year’s theme, putting the children in charge of their own fundraising.  They decided on a Pjs, Pudsy and Pal day.  Everyone came to school in their pyjamas with their Pudsey or special cuddly (Pudsy’s pals) for a small £1 donation.  During assembly that day Mrs Meade invited everyone to put their coins on a giant Pudsy (painted by the School Council), making his pjs even spottier!  Great fun was had painting Pudsy…as you can imagine!

The following week The Rotary Club came to collect the shoe boxes filled by our children to be sent to other less fortunate children in other parts of the world.  The School Council were on hand again to help carry the boxes to the awaiting van.

At Christmas Year 2 and the School Council walked to Willow Court Residential Home in order to sing some of our Christmas songs to the elderly residents.

Mrs Fox came to one of our meetings in January to ask the School Council to carry out a survey relating to Themed School Dinner Days for the coming year.  The following dinners were chosen by everyone in school:

Chinese Day in February

Easter Day in March

War Time Day in April… and

Picnic Day in June

Later on in the term we spent an afternoon tidying the shed in the back playground, throwing away any broken or very old toys.  The children took it in turns to sweep the shed clear of all the SPIDERS!

Finally, Mrs Pattrick came to one of our meetings and asked for the Council’s input on changing ‘The Golden Rules’ to The 5 Crabtree Rules.  We spent some time deciding how we might display the new rules in school…hence the very colourful rainbow display in the school hall with every child’s handprint representing ‘The 5 Crabtree Rules’.

Summer term 2015 - a new School Council...

This term our new school value has been RESPECT.  In assembly the children created an acrostic poem all about RESPECT.  The School Council designed a new display...Blooming With Respect and had great fun in the process painting their hands various different colours!

What else have we been up to?

At the end of spring we took our scissors and watering cans outside the front entrance for a tidy up.  We snipped the heads off the once beautiful daffodils and watered the remaining flowers in their pots.

Miss Aukett asked the children if they would mind getting the PE equipment ready for sports day.  An afternoon playing with balls and javelins?  Of course they didn't mind!

The Summer Fair was looming and the children were eager to help me run a 'biscuit decorating stall'.  In preparation they enjoyed designing some biscuits and making price labels for the stall.  It was a VERY hot day but everyone took turns to mix icing sugar, take money, give change etc.  Thank you councillors...especially as some of us were melting along with the biscuits!

Finally...

at the end of the school year the School Council, along with Year 2, visited the residents of Willow Court Residential Home.  The children delighted the residents by singing a selection of popular summer songs.

We have a new School Council

We have a new School Council…

Well done to everyone elected and make sure you wear your shiny, yellow badges with pride!

What a lot of things we seem to have done so far:

Our first task was to help Mrs Meade at the Macmillan Coffee and Cake afternoon, setting up the hall, serving delicious looking cakes, looking after the donations and giving out stickers.  Our generous parents gave a grand total of £308.68.  Here are some photos of our cafĂ©…

Mrs Pattrick has recently asked all the children in school about the values they consider important at Crabtree.

‘What is it that makes our school such a special place?’

After voting for their favourite value the School Council counted all the votes.  The most popular value was:

‘Caring’

We have discussed what ‘caring’ means to us and those ideas will be put into a word cloud and displayed around the school.

Then on Friday 14th November it was…Children In Need!

In a recent meeting the children had lots of fun painting a giant Pudsey Bear for our ‘Children In Need’ assembly.  They wanted everyone to come to school in their pyjamas and to bring their super-hero teddies and a donation in with them.  During the assembly Mrs Meade invited everyone to put their coins on Pudsey, making his pyjamas even spottier!  We raised a grand total of £210.70.  Thank you everyone.

The following week The Rotary Club came to collect the shoe boxes filled by our children,  to be sent to other children less fortunate than ourselves.  The School Council were on hand to carry the boxes into the van.  It was hard work!

School Council update

School Council Minutes –  meeting held 21st May 2014

Today we took our meeting to the Junior School where we held a joint meeting with the junior school councillors.

We got to know each other by saying our names and year groups.  Year 5 were unable to join us because they were on their school journey.

The Infant councillors started the meeting by sharing with everyone what they have been doing so far in their role as councillors:

  •    We had our photos taken for our display.
  •    We have helped Mrs Roberson to sort the books in the library into old books, tatty books and books that have more than one copy.
  •  Mr Jones from Herts Catering came to ask us our opinions about school dinners.

The junior councillors then told us about the jobs that they have been carrying out:
  •  They have asked their classes to decide on a hamster or a rabbit  as a possible school pet.
  •   A letter will be written to the Chair of Governors inviting him to a meeting to discuss the possibility of a school pet.
  • They are planning an assembly to the whole school about the new pet.
  •   Problems arising in class are taken and discussed in their meetings.  As a result new soap was purchased for the toilets.
  •  The children wanted to do more experiments in science so Miss Simmons is now running a science club.
  •      Suggestions about music for the school disco have been collected and given to the DJ.
As a special treat we all went to the pond to see the ducklings who are now 10 days old.  They are still going everywhere with mum who protects them from the weather by tucking all 14 of them under her wings!  They will be taken down to Batford Springs when they are 6 weeks old to be released into the wild.

Coming Next...

We are now preparing for our 'Biscuit Decorating Stall' at the Summer Fayre on 28th June.  The children have been busy drawing some biscuits and making price labels for the stall.  We look forward to seeing everyone there...come and decorate your own delicious biscuit!
